Plastic Recycling in Portland

Northwest Polymers Supporting Portland Recycling Efforts

But since as far back as the 1980s, when the first city recycling policy was adopted, Portland recycling initiatives have played no small part in establishing the city as a genuine leading light in the area of urban environmentalism and waste management systems.

In more recent years, there has been a committed drive to educate the public and businesses on the benefits of recycling – the Master Recycler Program being central to those efforts.

Domestic recycling has increased dramatically as a result, with the roll cart system providing curb-side collection services for rigid and non-rigid plastics, as well as compostable materials. In July 2012, the city government introduced a ban on plastic check out bags, to reduce littering levels.

Of course, recycling in Portland extends beyond the domestic sector. The city has a large manufacturing sector, with the world leading computer components firm Intel one of an estimated 1,200 technology companies sited there. Other key manufacturers include sportswear giants Nike and Adidas, and communications components firm TriQuint SemiConductor.

With so many manufacturers, as well as booming commercial and construction sectors, a large amount of scrap plastic is generated. This is where we at Northwest Polymers have made our contribution to a cleaner, ‘Greener’ Portland.

For years, we have been collecting and recycling the unwanted plastic from commercial and industrial clients, transporting their plastic waste to our state-of-the-art recycling center in Molalla. There, 14 individual plastic resins are sorted, purified and reprocessed into pellet, regrind or pulverized forms, ready for our purchasing clients in a variety of manufacturing industries to use in creating second generation plastic products.

As the chief urban center in the state, Portland recycle initiatives are a key aspect of overall state-wide efforts. But at Northwest Polymers, we’re not satisfied with playing a part in plastic recycling in Portland. That’s why we go further for all of our clients, providing Value Added Services makes waste plastic disposal and recycling as simple, reliable and cost-effective as possible.
